NACM Mission and Values

Modern Solutions. Timeless Values.

Strengthening businesses and credit professionals through trusted information, education, innovative services, and relationships built to last is central to the NACM mission and values. The NACM mission and values guide everything we do to support our members.

NACM Mission and Values

For generations, NACM has brought credit professionals together to share knowledge, strengthen the credit profession, and promote responsible commercial credit practices.

Today, the NACM mission and values continue to guide how we serve our members and customers. We strengthen businesses and credit professionals through trusted information, education, services, and professional relationships. At the same time, we remain committed to the principles that have guided NACM for generations.

Our goal is not simply to provide information or services. Instead, we want to give credit professionals the resources, knowledge, and connections they need to make informed business decisions.

Our mission is to strengthen the businesses and credit professionals we serve through trusted information, education, innovative services, and the collective experience of our members—while remaining true to the principles of integrity, fair dealing, personal service, and professional responsibility that have guided NACM for generations.

The Principals behind our Mission and Values

Integrity

We conduct business honestly and work to maintain the trust placed in us by our members, customers, and business community.

Fair Dealing

We treat people fairly and promote responsible, ethical practices throughout the commercial credit community. In doing so, we help support stronger and more trustworthy business relationship

Knowledge

We share information and professional experience responsibly to help businesses make better credit decisions. In addition, we support continuing education that helps credit professionals strengthen their skills and judgment.

Service

We provide responsive, personal service and remain accountable to the members and customers we serve. Although technology continues to improve how services are delivered, personal attention remains an important part of our work.

Innovation

We embrace technology and new ideas that improve efficiency and provide better information. However, innovation should strengthen the human relationships behind our work, not replace them..

Technology Changes. Our Principles Don’t.

The tools used in business and commercial credit have changed dramatically since NACM South Atlantic’s roots were established in 1926. Information that once moved by paper, telephone, and mail can now be exchanged almost instantly.

Today, automation, advanced analytics, and artificial intelligence are changing how quickly we gather, analyze, and act on information. We welcome those changes.

Technology can help credit professionals work faster, identify patterns, reduce repetitive tasks, and make better use of available information. However, technology remains a tool. It is not a substitute for the experience and judgment of the people making the decision.

Our History

A Long History of Supporting the Credit Profession

NACM’s history reaches back to 1896, when the National Association of Credit Men was founded to bring credit professionals together, exchange information, and promote responsible credit practices.

The name reflected the terminology and membership of its era. Over the generations, both the profession and the association have evolved significantly. However, many of the principles behind the organization have endured.

Education, reliable credit information, professional relationships, responsible information sharing, and sound business judgment remain important to the credit profession today.

A Foundation in 1896

The national association was founded in 1896 to unite credit professionals, exchange business information, and encourage sound credit practices.

This 50th anniversary publication preserves part of that early history and reflects an enduring commitment to the commercial credit profession.

Advocacy and a Changing Business Environment

NACM’s historical publications document an organization engaged with issues affecting credit, bankruptcy, banking, and commerce.

The pages shown here reflect a period when the nation’s financial system was changing rapidly. Credit professionals were already confronting many of the same fundamental questions they face
today: how to evaluate risk, exchange reliable information, and adapt to change.

A Profession Shaped by Change

This historical photograph shows President Woodrow Wilson addressing Congress during an era of major change in the nation’s banking and currency system.

The Federal Reserve Act was signed into law in 1913. NACM’s own historical publication records the association’s support for the banking and currency reforms of that period.

The tools, terminology, and business environment have changed dramatically since 1896. Yet the need for reliable information, professional education, trusted relationships, and good judgment has remained remarkably consistent. That history provides a natural bridge between where NACM has been and where the credit profession is going next.

Even in the Age of AI, Credit Remains a People Business

A credit report can provide valuable data. NACM trade information can show how a company is actually paying other creditors. In addition, analytics can help identify trends and potential risks.

However, information becomes most valuable when an experienced credit professional understands what it means. That professional can ask the right questions, consider the circumstances, and apply sound business judgment.

Personal interaction also continues to matter. For example, conversations among credit professionals can provide context that numbers alone cannot always capture.

Industry Credit Group Meetings create opportunities for those conversations. Likewise, professional relationships, education, and the responsible exchange of credit information provide additional perspective.

As a result, credit professionals can better understand not only what is happening, but also what may be behind it.

Better Technology. Better Information. Experienced People.

We believe the future of credit management will combine better technology, better information, and experienced people.

Artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies will continue to change the profession. As these tools improve, they may help professionals analyze more information and recognize patterns that were previously difficult to identify.

Still, technology does not know a customer the way an experienced credit professional can. It cannot replace every conversation, professional relationship, or lesson learned through years of experience.

Therefore, new technology should support informed decision-making rather than replace the people responsible for those decisions.

Principles That Endure

As technology continues to evolve, our principles remain the same:

Do business honestly. Treat people fairly. Share knowledge responsibly. Keep our commitments. Use good judgment. Earn the trust of the people we serve.

These principles have served NACM South Atlantic and the commercial credit community for generations. No matter how technology changes, they will continue to guide what comes next.

Modern Solutions. Timeless Values. Trusted Relationships.

That’s the commitment of NACM South Atlantic.

By combining trusted information, professional education, innovative services, and personal relationships, we help credit professionals meet today’s challenges while preparing for tomorrow.

Technology will continue to change. The way information is collected and analyzed will change with it. However, our commitment to integrity, knowledge, service, responsible innovation, and professional judgment will remain at the heart of what we do.

Modern Solutions. Timeless Values. Trusted Relationships.

That’s the commitment of NACM South Atlantic. Our dedication to NACM’s mission and values sets us apart.
